When a panel upgrade makes sense
Most homes built before the 1990s came with 100 amp service, and many of those panels are at the end of their life. If you are adding an EV charger, a hot tub, central air or a shop, or if breakers trip when two big loads run at once, the panel is usually the bottleneck. Some older brands are a safety issue on their own and insurers increasingly ask for them to be replaced.

Kyle and his crew at KMB Electric were recommended to me by a buddy to do an electrical upgrade and air conditioning connect on my house. Very professional, time conscious and always kept me updated. More than competitively priced, and the quality of work was beyond top notch.
Electrical Service and Panel Upgrades FAQ
How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?
Common signs are breakers that trip often, a panel with no open spaces, flickering when big appliances start, a 100 amp service on a home you want to add an EV charger or hot tub to, or a panel brand with a known safety history. A quick look tells us which.
Will my power be off?
Yes, for part of a day. The utility disconnects the service, we set the new panel and reconnect every circuit, the inspector signs off, and power comes back on. We schedule it so you know the window in advance.
Do you replace Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels?
Yes. Those panels have a documented history of breakers failing to trip. Replacing one is a straightforward job and often a requirement for insurance or a home sale.
Do I need a permit?
Yes. Service and panel work always requires an electrical permit and inspection in Colorado Springs and El Paso County. We pull the permit, meet the inspector and give you the paperwork.
Can I add a sub panel instead of upgrading the whole service?
Sometimes. If your main service has capacity and you just need more breaker spaces in a garage or basement, a sub panel is the right answer. If the service itself is maxed out, the main has to be upgraded. The load calculation decides it.
Is whole house surge protection worth it?
For most homes, yes. A panel mounted surge protector guards appliances, electronics and EV chargers from utility spikes and nearby lightning for a small added cost during an upgrade.
